Beet It Berry Shake

beet_smoothie_plantbased

This beautiful beet smoothie comes from my dear friend, holistic nutritionist and mom of 2, Insightful Bite.

First things first: This little beet-filled beauty is a stainer, so let’s put a lid on this one and avoid wearing your favourite white shirt while sipping, shall we?! ⠀

So why are we adding beets to a smoothie, you might ask?! Other than making it look really pretty, we loveeeee the health benefits of beets! Beets contain phytonutrients called betalains, which help stimulate liver cells to eliminate toxins. They’re also a good source of fiber, which helps make sure those toxins make their way out of your body, if ya know what I mean. ⠀

They’re also an amazing source of antioxidants. ⠀

Frozen banana and berries provide the sweetness and creaminess to this smoothie, as well as more antioxidants and fiber. Did you know bananas are also a good source of the feel-good amino-acid Tryptophan?! Tryptophan helps maintain a good mood. Yes, please! ⠀

Fresh ginger is a powerful antioxidant and great anti-inflammatory food. Since inflammation is linked to almost all major disease (like cancer, diabetes and heart disease), maintaining an anti-inflammatory diet can be really helpful! ⠀

Berry Radical Protein Powder: This starts out with cold-pressed organic hemp seeds, and then gets a super dose of vitamin C and antioxidants from some really amazing berries: Maqui berries, Elderberries, and Camu Camu. Antioxidants fight free radicals and protect you against oxidative damage to the cells. If you don’t have any, feel free to use your favourite protein powder or a tablespoon or two of hemp seeds for some added protein! ⠀
